Maxime Simon, born 1973.
Self-taught artist, Maxime is stemming from a lineage of draftsmen and painters whose activities extend from the 18th century to our times. Seeing then watching their works in his childhood arouse in his mind, little by little, a fascination for the image, a questioning for the nature of it, and how it is able to extract things out of time. But in his youth, art is not put to an emphasis at home. He lately gets his first reflex camera at the age of 21.
From then on he relentlessly captures and collects images in order to translate his emotions and his aesthetic crushes. More over, he is enthusiastic about the process in which both the eye and the aim of the photographer come up against the rendering of the photographic medium (camera and chemistry / pixels), and, not least, how the photographer can learn from this confrontation.
His practice is centered at first on analog black and white photography. In 2007, looking for new means of expression, he discovers how numerous the plastic and creative possibilities of Polaroid and Fuji instant films are. In one hand, they allow him to have a more intuitive practice, while being seduced by the element of surprise in instant films, that is to say the impredictable way they somehow give birth to the pictures. In another hand, he opens several ways in his work using and adapting different methods of physical manipulation on images. These arts-and-crafts techniques mainly involve dry and wet transfers, mixed media additions.
Maxime organizes personal exhibitions, participates in collective exhibitions, and has been running workshops for two years. He lives in France, near Lyon.
