"Photography for me is a way to be creative and also a license to discover that which I do not know or do not understand. It is a way to explore my infatuation with humanity. It allows me the freedom to connect with and dissect the world before my lens. I feel most present and alive when making photographs. Mine is an honest vision and one without bells and whistles or pomp and circumstances—a pared down, organic world with no concern for modernité yet more for timeless essences. I want my photos to have a quiet, yet fierce impact and power. Like a whisper that hits you in the gut. I believe that the best photographic art is made when the eyes, heart, and mind are aligned. This is why I say "Making art with an exacting eye, loving heart, and inquisitive mind." Hopefully my photos pose more questions than they can possibly answer."
Greg Friedler in the interview with Alexander Scholz
My book, Greg Friedler's : HUMANITY, is easily the biggest milestone in my career to date. I always photograph from my own unique vantage point, yet one could say that I have multiple personalities or varying perspectives with regards to my photographic artwork. I find equal value in nudes, portraits, still lifes, abstract work, urban color facades, anthropological studies, typologies, documentary work, etc. This book is so important to me because I have finally found someone, Alexander Scholz, who "gets it" and can see the larger picture, no pun intended. He can see that, though my work may appear to be made by different artists, it is all woven together by one common denominator: my fascination and curiosity with mankind. I am known all around the world for my figurative work, and many would consider me to be "the naked guy," yet I am far from a one trick pony. The figurative work was merely act one of what I hope to be a three or four act play. The celebration of my work in this unbelievable book will, I hope, allow people to see and explore my work with a fresh set of eyes.
