It comes signed by Yamamoto Masao in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies as handmade book with tipped in pigment prints on baryta paper. The prints are mounted by hand in special passepartouts.
The book itself is an artwork: it is bound in a special leporello technic with many plates as foldouts in many directions for an complex multidimensional view on the poetry and Masaos photographs. The book is bound in silk and the plates have hinges of linen.
The regular selling price is 1.500,00 EUR.

The pigment prints inside the book are printed on baryta paper and they really look fantastic. The print is like the original, the paper a little bit different, of course. But nobody sees or feels the different, if he do not hold Masaos prints in the hand. And how we can make a adequately original: Masaos prints are unique pieces, we can just try to catch the feeling. He had no single corrections while checking the proofs. Our printer is Ralf Lenk (Scancolor) in Leipzig, he is one of the master printers in the world.

The Poems of Santoka is part of the collection of the Kunstbibliothek / Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
Though not as well-known in the West as many of the earlier haiku poets, Santōka (1882-1940), whose nom de plume means "Mountain-top Fire" was a brilliant master of the free verse haiku and a poet whose work deeply moves Yamamoto Masao, perhaps the most poetic Japanese photographic artist since Fukuhara Shinzo. It was Yamamoto's idea to create a book of his photographs and Santōka's poems. And you hold here in your hands the beautiful result, which was admirably aided by Seiko Uyeda's superb translations.
In another book about Yamamoto Masao, I reminded readers of a famous Zen story about Kakua, the first Japanese to study Zen in China. Later he moved to a mountain where he meditated constantly. But people would find him and ask him to preach to them. He would say a few words and then move to a more remote part of the mountain. When he eventually returned to Japan, the emperor asked Kakua to come and expostulate on Zen before him and an assembled audience. Kakua stood before them silently, took a flute from his robe, blew a single note, bowed, and left the assembly.

Because of the sophisticated printing methods involved, each print is unique, an original. Scholz uses the world's best reproduction/photographic printing techniques. Digital files undergo traditional darkroom chemistries and develop on paper with red, green, and blue light (C-Prints). Some will be printed as pigment print or as UV print. Black and White pictures will be also presented on Baryta paper. Before binding, in some books the prints are mounted fully on special boards. For pigment prints, Scholz works with Hahnemühle paper and for UV-prints (digital screen printing), Scheufelen paper. Some books will be printed with a special digital color technology on Munken, a Swedish paper.
